Oxytocin has molecular formula C43H66N12O12S2, and the weight is 1007.2. This compound, intended only for research, has been around for over 100 years. The fact that it can cause the uterus to contract was discovered in 1906, and in 1910-1911 it was noted that it stimulats milk secretion. The amino acid sequence was discovered in 1953, and it was then that scientists were first able to synthesize it.
The original function of Oxytocin is to be a neuromodulator in the brain as well as in peripheral areas. It also plays a role in various aspects of behavior including reproductive and sexual. As is the case with other proteins, it has receptors that are specific to certain substances. In this case, the many of them are particular to rhodopsin. Oxytocin can also decrease the levels of some cytokines, which influences inflammatory processes. The link between oxytocin and sexual response, however, is still not well known, and there have been few studies related specifically to this.
